The Studio One team is made up of highly qualified and experienced engineers and specialists who are passionate about buildings, the built environment, and maintaining a strong focus on environmental impact and protecting the natural environment.

Founded in 2012 when the turmoil of the recession presented an opportunity, Studio One aims to deliver civil and structural engineering excellence. Based in Manchester, the team work on a variety of projects in a wide range of sectors including residential, commercial, transport infrastructure and events.

My love of building started as a young child and I completed my first brick built house in my parent’s garden aged eleven. Even then it was pretty clear what industry I was headed for. I went to Loughborough Uni and got my master’s in Civil Engineering and Building in 1994.  Since then I’ve qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Chartered Structural Engineer. I have worked at a number of places (Jacobs, Whitby Bird and Civic Engineers) before setting up Studio One in 2012.  The business has really taken off and I’m enjoying working on a range of projects in various sectors including domestic, residential, rail, commercial, leisure, industrial and event engineering.

Despite now being an accountant, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History of European Art & Architecture from the University of Leicester in 1998.  Not knowing what to do next I set upon the path of becoming a chartered accountant, which I achieved in 2001.  I’ve worked for a number of firms, including Ernst & Young and KPMG, and now work as Commercial Director alongside Jason where I enjoy mixing the number side of things with something a little more creative.

After graduating with a Masters in Structural Engineering with Architecture from The University of Manchester I spent 10 years at a structural and civil engineering consultancy in Manchester before joining Studio One in October 2018. I have a diverse portfolio of work from my experience and I especially enjoy working on listed structures.  My experience includes working on residential developments, schools, health centres, footbridges, public realm, railway structures and art structures to name but a few.

David Shodeke

CONSULTANT

My passion for structural engineering was inspired by a documentary on the concept of constructing a transatlantic tunnel from London to New York. I developed an enthusiasm for problem solving and attended The University of Salford to study Civil Engineering. Since graduating in 2015, I have worked on a variety of projects ranging including the UK’s first low carbon urban neighbourhood, bespoke art sculptures, railway structures, residential towers, and commercial projects. At Studio One I am enjoying the freedom to be creative in my work while pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.

Subir Gupta

ENGINEER

I graduated from the University of Salford with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 2012 and went back to acquire my Master’s degree in Structural Engineering which I completed in 2016. I worked for a steel manufacturer before moving to Studio One in Summer 2019 to cultivate my engineering skills and pursue chartership. I enjoy the everyday challenges of working in a fast-paced environment on a diverse array of projects, and nurturing my creative side with scheme/concept design.

Mohammed Nasarullah

ENGINEER

After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from the University of Bradford, I spent two years at a Civil Engineering consultancy in Manchester as part of the Highways and Transportation team before joining Studio One. At Studio One I have the opportunity to work on various types of projects to develop my competencies and support my route to chartership. Outside of work I enjoy cycling, hiking and going to the gym regularly to maintain good health and a fresh mind.

ENGINEER

Luke graduated from Coventry University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He joined Studio One in early 2024.

ENGINEER

I graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2023 with a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering and Architecture, and went on to join Studio One as a Graduate Engineer in January 2024. In my time with Studio One I have been involved in a large variety of projects and have already begun to develop my skills and knowledge in both structural and civil engineering. I am looking forward to continuing my career journey with Studio One and working my way towards chartership in the future.

After graduating from the University of Manchester in 2017 with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering I joined a local engineering consultancy. However, after only one and a half years behind the desk, I decided to get my hands dirty and jump into the magical world of property development. Two and half years (and one baby) later I happily reintroduced engineering design into my life and started working part-time at Studio One alongside my other commitments as an amateur property developer and a beginner mum.

James Rous

ENGINEER

I am currently studying for an MEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester and undertake the role of graduate engineer at Studio One as part of my industrial placement year. I have always had a keen curiosity and passion for engineering, in particular how sustainable practices can more easily be integrated into the industry. The transition from University work to engineering consultancy has been an eye-opening experience allowing me to test my limits in both engineering knowledge as well as job specific skills such as client interaction which continue to improve at an exponential rate through each project and through always being helpfully assisted by the team at Studio One.
